India vs West Indies 2nd ODI Match Live Score 24 Nov 2013
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli guided India to a comprehensive six-wicket victory over the West Indies in the first One-Day International (ODI) at the Nehru Stadium, Kochi. Chasing 212 to win the game, India were never really threatened during their run-chase and sealed the deal with ease. West Indies were bowled out for 211 due to Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja’s three-wicket hauls.
The variable bounce in the innings was obvious early during the Indian innings. Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan watched a few deliveries early on and Jason Holder troubled them a little. Holder finally had his success when he had Dhawan edging to the wicket-keeper.
Then came Kohli and in partnership with Rohit, he took complete control of the game. Kohli started things off by smashing a few boundaries through the off-side and looked in splendid touch. Taking a cue from him, Rohit too unleashed his brilliance with an array of breathtaking strokes.
When Sunil Narine came on in the 11th over, many felt that the game could potentially change. However, Rohit dealt with his off-spinners with complete control. On one occasion, Rohit wept him over mid-wicket and it sailed over the ropes for a six.
Kohli and Rohit nonchalantly rallied India and the West Indies bowlers posed no threats as such. Rohit moved past his fifty after carting Narsingh Deonarine for two fours and then pushing for a single. In the 25th over, India opted for the batting powerplay and Ravi Rampaul got the wicket of Rohit as he holed out to deep square-leg.
Kohli continued and moved past his fifty. With each passing over, he grew more in confidence as even Yuvraj Singh got some much needed time in the middle. However, Kohli tried to force the issue as he moved to 86 and he tried to smash Holder over long-off, but was caught just outside the inner circle. Suresh Raina fell to Narine for a blob, but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj saw it through a lot of overs in hand.
Earlier, on a decent looking track, West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo won the toss and elected to bat first. Instead of Denesh Ramdhin, they opted to play the extra batsman in Deonarine. Narine and Holder came into the side to form a bowling attack with Darren Sammy and Rampaul.
West Indies had a disastrous start to their innings when Chris Gayle was run-out off the second ball. He pushed Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the off-side and tried to sprint through for a single. However, Bhuvneshwar got across after completing his follow through and threw it to the non-striker’s end. Gayle was diving, but was found short of the crease. To make matters worse, he looked in severe pain and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher.
Johnson Charles and Marlon Samuels then took control of things by striking a few boundaries. Charles in particular was in great touch and laced the off-side with some good strokes. The duo were going very well and looked very comfortable against the seamers, but once the spinners came on, it was a different game altogether.
Jadeja struck in his first over when Charles lobbed a catch back and he dived to his left to take a magnificent catch. Then, Raina came on and he castled Samuels with one that stayed low and shattered the stumps. The wicket was offering assistance to the spinners early and it was only a sign of things to come.
Lendl Simmons and Darren Bravo then helped West Indies recover and put up a decent partnership. Darren Bravo was in great touch and got things going with a six over long-off. Throughout his stay, he looked fluent and in control of the proceedings. However, wickets fell at regular intervals after Simmons was dismissed leg-before by Raina.
Dwayne Bravo came in and stroked 24 before being stumped off Jadeja. It happened just after Darren Bravo was bowled for 59 by Mohammed Shami. From there on, there wasn’t much fight although Jason Holder took them to their eventual total.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma hit sparkling half-centuries after spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 37) and Suresh Raina (3 for 34) shone with the ball to thrash the visitors at the Nehru Stadium.
“I think it was a fantastic performance. It could have been even better if one of the batsmen scored a 100. I think the spinners did the job for us,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
Asked to bowl, Jadeja and Raina exploited the low and slow conditions effectively to bundle out West Indies for a meager 211 in 48.5 overs. Kohli then smashed 86 off 84 balls, while Rohit made 72 off 81 balls to help India chased down the target with consummate ease in 35.2 overs.
“We didn’t start very well, with the ball coming on nicely. There was a bit of variable bounce which assisted our fast bowlers. Overall, I think the spinners did the job and kept the pressure on,” Dhoni said.
“It was not easy for the opposition to rotate the strike, so they had to go for the big strokes. I thought it was a wicket where the spinners can do the job, so I thought let’s start with Raina. He bowls slightly flattish and can be of good effect with the variable bounce. The first wicket he got it didn’t bounce much,” Dhoni said about his decision to introduce Raina ahead of regular spinner Ashwin.
“I think they (Dhawan, Rohit, Virat) have been batting really well. Again Virat was brilliant. I thought our bowlers did well and the batsmen negotiated the new ball really well.
There was not many runs to be scored, but still they batted really well, especially of Narine who was spinning it both ways,” he added.
West Indies skipper Dwayne Bravo rated the performance of his side as “below-par”.
“We fell short of our batting target. We felt we were below par. We have to take responsibility for this. We didn’t adjust to the style of play,” he said.
“It’s not a 300 or 290 wicket, if you can get to 250, it could have been a bit different. (Ravi) Rampaul and (Jason) Holder bowled very well so that is good signs for us going into the next game. We got out at the wrong time apart from (Marlon) Samuels and (Darren) Bravo.”
Man-of-the-match Virat Kohli, who today became the joint fastest along with West Indian batting legend Viv Richards to reach the 5000 runs in ODIs, said playing with a straight bat was the order of the day on the pitch here, which had variable bounce.
“When we fielded I sorted out how to play. The ball might keep low at any point of time so need to keep a straight bat.
So, I just wanted to play as straight and late as close to the body,” he said.
“I started timing it well so it gave me confidence and kept me going from there. Me and Rohit were conscious about playing as straight as we can. The idea was to just play straight and keep rotating the strike. It was nice to have to bat with him (Rohit).India batsman Virat Kohli becomes the joint fastest with viv Richards to reach 5,000 One-Day International (ODI) runs when he reached the landmark against the West Indies in the second ODI at Kochi on Thursday.
He took 114 innings to reach the feat. In what has been a spectacular year for the Delhi batsman, Kohli has gone on to amass more than 1,000 runs in the 50-over format, including four centuries.
He has played a crucial role along with openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma in India’s spectacular run of form since the ICC Champions Trophy 2013.
